When the atmospheric rivers roll in off the Pacific, your car needs to be ready. Tips from your neighbors at Top Shop.
Santa Barbara doesn't get much rain, but when it comes, it comes hard. Atmospheric rivers can dump inches in hours, turning Montecito's creeks into rivers and making the 101 a slip-and-slide. Here's how to prepare.
Wipers and Visibility
Those wipers that sat baking in the sun all summer? They're probably shot. Replace them before the first storm. And while you're at it, top off your washer fluid. You'll need it when mud splashes up on San Marcos Pass.
Tires and Traction
Check your tire tread depth. The penny test works: insert a penny head-first into the tread. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time for new tires. This is especially critical if you commute on the 154 or drive through the Gaviota Pass.
Brakes
Wet roads mean longer stopping distances. If your brakes squeal, grind, or feel soft, get them checked before the rains hit. Nobody wants brake problems on the curves of Gibraltar Road.
Lights
California law requires headlights when wipers are on. Make sure all your lights work: headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. It's a quick check that could prevent an accident on a dark, rainy evening on Hollister.
Emergency Kit
Keep a flashlight, blanket, water, and phone charger in your car. If you get stuck on the 101 during a mudslide closure (it happens), you'll be glad you did.
