Meet the Owner
Willie has been turning wrenches on Santa Barbara's imports for nearly four decades. He built Top Shop on a simple promise: tell you the truth about your car, do the work right the first time, and stand behind it. Every job that leaves the bay carries his name.
"If it isn't safe enough for my own family to drive, it isn't leaving my shop."
Beetles, Buses, Karmann Ghias, Type 3s and Vanagons are one of our specialties. We source the right parts and handle the quirks that modern shops won't touch. See our vintage VW repair page.
Our ASE-certified mechanics specialize in European cars, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen, along with vintage air-cooled VWs. We also work on Asian imports such as Subaru, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai, plus hybrids, EVs and Teslas. Oscar is our Tesla specialist. Call (805) 964-6554 to check on your car.

Best mechanic shop I have been to for my 2016 VW GTI. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They email you a high-level inspection report each time you visit. I feel that I can trust that this shop won’t try to up-sell me on unnecessary jobs. Highly recommend.

Great friendly service. Knowledgeable folks who explained everything really well. Not pushy at all about service items, let me know what was reasonable to delay and what needed to be done right away. Glad to have a knowledgeable Subaru mechanic in Santa Barbara

GeneralIt depends on the car, whether it needs pads only or pads and rotors, and the parts your car calls for. European cars often cost more because of parts and wear sensors. Call (805) 964-6554 for a quote. For drivers in Santa Barbara and Goleta, we email you photos and a written estimate before any work, and you decide what gets done.
PricingMost modern import vehicles recommend oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, depending on whether you use conventional or synthetic oil. European vehicles like BMW and Mercedes often require full synthetic oil and longer intervals. We'll check your manufacturer's recommendations and advise accordingly.
The check engine light can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine issue. We use advanced diagnostic scanners to read the trouble codes specific to your import vehicle and provide an accurate diagnosis. Don't ignore it, bring it in and we'll pinpoint the issue quickly.
DiagnosticsYes. We service hybrids, electric vehicles and Teslas. Oscar is our Tesla specialist. Call (805) 964-6554 and tell us your model and year.
GeneralWe can usually turn many routine services and repairs around the same day, like oil changes and brake work. Bigger jobs, such as transmission work or repairs that need parts ordered, can take 1 to 3 business days. We give you a time estimate before we start.
GeneralOur scheduled maintenance follows your manufacturer's recommended service intervals and typically includes oil and filter change, fluid level checks, tire rotation, brake inspection, belt and hose inspection, battery test, and a multi-point safety check. We tailor it to your specific vehicle.
Yes. Our standard warranty is 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. We use OEM-quality or better parts.
We proudly serve Santa Barbara, Goleta, Montecito, Carpinteria, and the surrounding communities along the Central Coast. Many customers drive from as far as Ventura and San Luis Obispo for our specialized import repair services.
GeneralIn many cases, yes. Repairing a well-maintained import vehicle is often far more cost-effective than buying new. We'll give you an honest assessment of your vehicle's condition and help you decide whether repair or replacement makes the most financial sense.
GeneralOur ASE-certified mechanics have decades of import-specific experience, and we use OEM-quality parts. We email you photos and a written estimate before any work, and you decide what gets done.
GeneralSynthetic oil is engineered to provide superior engine protection, better performance in extreme temperatures, and longer intervals between changes. Most European imports (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW) require full synthetic. Japanese imports can often use either, but synthetic typically provides better longevity. We'll recommend the right type for your vehicle.
MaintenanceWhen the repair costs more than the car is worth, or when one big repair is likely to be followed by several more. Weigh the car's value, its overall condition, how long you plan to keep it and what a replacement would cost. We email you an inspection report with photos and give you an honest view. Sometimes the repair doesn't make sense, and we'll say so.
Repairing is usually cheaper, even with a large bill, because a replacement brings a purchase price, sales tax, registration and often higher insurance. Replacing starts to make sense when the car needs several major repairs at once or is no longer safe. We'll tell you what else we see coming so you can compare.
PricingIt's a rule of thumb: if a repair costs less than about $3,000, or less than a year of payments on a replacement car, fixing your current car is usually the better deal. It's a rough guide, not a rule. The car's value, its condition and what else is due soon matter more. We give you a written estimate before any work.
PricingIt can make sense if the rest of the car is in good shape and the repair will give you years of use. Compare the cost to the car's value and to a year of payments on a replacement, and ask what else is due in the next year or two. Our inspection report shows the car's overall condition so you can decide with real information.
PricingNot on its own. A car with 200,000 miles and a good service history can be in better shape than one with half that and no records. Maintenance history, leaks and the condition of the engine and transmission matter more than the number. A pre-purchase inspection tells you what you're getting.
It refers to the larger maintenance services many manufacturers schedule around 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles, such as filters, fluids, spark plugs and inspections. The exact items vary by make, model and year, so we follow your car's factory schedule.
Fluids other than oil are the usual ones: brake fluid, coolant and transmission fluid. Air filters, cabin filters and tire pressure are close behind. We check these at each visit and note anything that's due in your emailed report.
MaintenanceIt isn't a good idea. Oil breaks down with time as well as miles, so most manufacturers call for a change at least once a year even if you drive very little. Short trips are hard on oil because the engine rarely gets fully warm, and many cars around Santa Barbara and Goleta are driven exactly that way.
MaintenanceAsk to see the worn part or the problem before you approve anything, get a written estimate, and compare what's recommended with your owner's manual. Be cautious about fluid flushes that aren't on your car's schedule. At Top Shop we email you photos of what we find, and you decide what gets done.
