Smog check time? Don't stress. Here's everything Santa Barbara drivers need to know to pass on the first try and avoid the hassle of retesting.
Every two years, California requires most vehicles to pass a smog inspection for registration renewal. If you've been putting it off, we get it. But with a little prep, you can pass on the first try and avoid the headache of a retest. Here's what we tell our neighbors in Santa Barbara.
When Do You Need a Smog Check?
- Every 2 years for vehicles 8 model years and older
- When selling or transferring a vehicle in California
- When registering an out-of-state vehicle
- Exempt: Electric vehicles, hybrids (first 8 years), diesels 1997 and older, and vehicles 4 model years and newer
Pre-Smog Checklist for SB Drivers
Before you head to the smog station, do these things:
- Drive for 15-20 minutes beforehand. A warm engine runs cleaner. Take a loop down Cabrillo to the harbor and back.
- Check your gas cap, a cracked or loose cap is the #1 reason for smog failures. Replace it if it's worn.
- Make sure the check engine light is off, if it's on, you'll automatically fail. Come see us first.
- Top off your tires, properly inflated tires help the dynamometer test go smoothly
- Use fresh oil, dirty oil produces more emissions. If you're due for a change, do it before your smog test.
Common Reasons Santa Barbara Cars Fail Smog
- Catalytic converter issues, our salt air can accelerate degradation over time
- Faulty O2 sensors, coastal humidity takes a toll on these sensors
- EVAP system leaks, often just a bad gas cap or cracked hose
- Rich fuel mixture, dirty fuel injectors or a failing mass airflow sensor
- Incomplete drive cycle, if the battery was recently disconnected, the car's computer needs time to reset
What If You Fail?
Don't panic. California's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) offers up to $800 in repair assistance for qualifying vehicles. And if your repair costs exceed $816 for newer vehicles, you may qualify for a smog check waiver.
At Top Shop, we can run a pre-smog diagnostic to identify any issues before you go to the testing station. We'll fix what needs fixing and make sure your car is ready to pass. It's a lot cheaper than failing and paying twice.
